Board approves bid process for 50x100 metal public works building

Reed Larson, County Engineer, asked the Board of Supervisors for authorization to go out to bid for erection of a 50‑by‑100‑foot metal building to serve the county’s new Public Works facility. The Board voted to approve the request.

Larson said the county has purchased the building and expects it to arrive on site later this month; the agenda item before the Board was the contractor selection to erect the building. He told supervisors that the concrete slab will be bid separately because concrete costs and delivery to the site are substantial; staff expects to return to the Board with a separate concrete bid request.

In the meeting, Larson described the procurement history: staff received proposals from at least two manufacturers (Mueller and Bunker Steel) and the Board previously awarded purchase of the building to Mueller. He said staff will provide a sealed, consistent bid package so all bidders get the same scope of work.

A supervisor asked whether the county would notify or solicit local contractors; Larson and staff said state posting and newspaper publication are required and that the county posts solicitations on its website; staff indicated they would also extend a courtesy notice to local contractors who have worked with the county, including the Ward brothers.

Larson estimated the slab cost at about $80,000. Following the presentation a motion to advertise for bids to erect the building was moved and seconded; the Board recorded an affirmative vote and directed staff to proceed with the sealed‑bid process.
