School committee approves BMS pollinator path project; volunteers to plant donated native plugs

The Barrington School Committee voted May 6 to approve a proposed pollinator garden expansion at Barrington Middle School (BMS). The project was presented by a sixth-grade teacher who leads the BMS environment club and by parent volunteer Katie Hyams, who described donated native-plant plugs and volunteer labor to install and maintain roughly a 500-square-foot pollinator area adjacent to the school's vegetable garden. The motion to approve the BMS Pollinator Path Project passed by voice vote with committee members indicating "Aye."
Hyams told the committee that native plants require little long-term maintenance once established, support pollinators and reduce stormwater runoff compared with turf. The teacher said students in the BMS garden club and volunteer parents would perform planting and upkeep, and that produce from the garden is donated to a local food pantry (Tappan). The presenters said the project would not cost the district: seedlings are donated and volunteer labor will prepare the bed and plant with student participation.
Committee members thanked the presenters and approved the project for placement and volunteer work. The administration will add the item to a future agenda for any required operational coordination.
