Sheriff’s Office representatives told the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners on May 5 that a $7,500 grant from the American Kennel Club (AKC) would be used to purchase a K‑9 dog to support narcotics detection, tracking and other K‑9 duties.
Tessa Burchette presented the item with Captain Michael Klutz and K‑9 team leader Deputy Barnhart in attendance. Burchette said K‑9 teams assist with drug and bomb detection, tracking suspects, and locating missing juveniles and vulnerable adults; the AKC grant requires no county match. She asked that the board accept the funding when the item appears for formal action. Because the board lacked a quorum, no acceptance vote was taken at the May 5 work session.
Commissioner Pittman asked no substantive questions at the briefing, and staff said they would bring necessary documentation for acceptance and appropriation at the appropriate meeting.
