Cabarrus County Veteran Services announced on May 5 that it received an award of $18,288.97 from the North Carolina Division of Military and Veterans Affairs and plans to use the funds for office supplies, minor equipment, personnel and advertising to increase outreach to local veterans.
Tony Miller told the Board of Commissioners the department applied in March and was notified of the award the prior Thursday. He said the grant requires no county match and that the additional funds will help expand outreach and service capacity to reach more of the county’s veterans; Miller said staff estimate they can reach up to about 12,000 veterans in the county with expanded outreach but did not provide a detailed breakdown of planned spending at the work session.
Commissioners present thanked Veteran Services staff for their work and noted interdepartmental assistance in responding quickly to information requests from the state during the application process. Because the board did not have a quorum, the award acceptance will be handled per the county’s grant-acceptance procedures when formal action is required.
