Board names Bruce Franklin and John Thaxton to two Planning Commission vacancies

The Sarasota Board of County Commissioners on April 23 filled two vacant seats on the Sarasota County Planning Commission, appointing Bruce Franklin to the term expiring Aug. 31, 2027, and John Thaxton to the term expiring Jan. 31, 2029.
Nicole Ressler, director of Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources, and staff explained the county recently changed rules so applicants remain in a planning commission applicant pool. Commissioners voted to fill both vacancies at the meeting after discussion about doing one or both appointments at once.
Commissioner Mast nominated Bruce Franklin for the seat with the Aug. 31, 2027 expiration. The board approved Franklin by voice vote; the transcript records Commissioner Mast, Commissioner Cuttsinger and Commissioner Knight saying "aye," followed by the chair's confirming vote.
For the seat expiring Jan. 31, 2029, commissioners nominated Ryan Lieberman and John Thaxton; the board appointed Thaxton after the recorded voice votes. The transcript records Commissioners Smith and Knight voting in favor and Commissioners Mast and Cuttsinger opposed; the chair cast the deciding vote in favor of Thaxton.
Both appointments filled terms left vacant by previous members and will be recorded in the county's appointment roster. The county clerk will update the planning commission membership following the meeting.
