Mayor and council appoint Roque Perez to represent Ward 5

The Tucson mayor and council appointed Roque Perez as the Ward 5 council member at a May 6 special meeting that followed an interview process of finalists for the seat left vacant by the resignation of Councilmember Richard Fimbres.
Selection process: Four finalists were invited to present five‑minute statements and answer two council questions about budget experience and familiarity with Ward 5. The finalists were David Garcia, Gabriel Olguin, Roque (Rocky) Perez and Robert Jaramillo; Jaramillo withdrew before the vote noting responsibilities to the Sunnyside Unified School District.
Council action: After presentations and a short council discussion that included commendations for all applicants and references to community service and local experience, the council voted 6–0 to adopt ordinance 12160 appointing Roque Perez to serve the remainder of the Ward 5 term. Perez took the oath of office immediately and joined the council for the regular meeting.
Why it matters: Perez will represent Ward 5 through the end of the current term and inherits immediate responsibilities during a period of active budget and policy decisions. Councilmembers asked the three other finalists to work collaboratively with Perez and to remain engaged in neighborhood work and future civic roles.
