Baltimore City Fire Department officials described a targeted community risk‑reduction program that uses census‑based mapping to identify neighborhoods with concentrations of residents age 65 and older and directs Saturday home visits and smoke‑alarm installs there.
Assistant Chief Dante Stewart (Community Risk Reduction) told the Public Safety Committee the department analyzed fire‑fatality data and census indicators to focus outreach to older adults who are at higher historical risk. Stewart said crews install smoke alarms and discuss safety topics such as hoarding, smoking in bed and overloaded electrical circuits. He described enhanced alarms and assistive devices — including “bed shaker” devices that work with smoke alarms for people who might not hear a conventional alarm — and said grant funds are being used to supply some of that equipment.
Stewart said the program, active since 2022 with more public outreach starting in January, is coordinated with the Mayor’s Office of Aging, the Commission on Aging and Adult Affairs, Meals on Wheels and AARP. He said captains and company officers enter identified hazards such as hoarding or other risks into the department’s computer‑aided dispatch so responding units have a location history before arrival.
