District reports attendance, dropout and mobility figures to school committee

Dr. Tamara Blake Canty presented the Chelsea Public Schools’ indicators of success to the school committee, tying the measures to the district strategic plan and culturally responsive teaching and learning.
Blake Canty said daily attendance for grades 9–12 is in the 80th percentile on average for April, and pre‑K and kindergarten groups are in the 90th percentile for the month. She reported a dropout count of 69 students as of Oct. 1, which she gave as a 3.78 percent rate. Blake Canty also provided mobility figures for April by school level: ELC (3 in, 7 out), elementary (12 in, 11 out), middle school (8 in, 9 out) and high school (8 in, 4 out); she said the district overall had 31 students in and 31 students out for April and cumulative tracking since October showed 694 students in and 549 out.
The committee did not take formal action on the indicators report during the meeting.
Members asked follow‑up questions about the measures and the relationship between attendance, dropout risk and instructional engagement; staff emphasized the connection between consistent attendance and student access to learning and relationships with teachers.
