Manager seeks temporary appointment of Cheryl Mativia as acting treasurer; council to ratify at future meeting

Barre’s city manager asked the council on Tuesday to replace an agenda item and to appoint Cheryl Mativia as acting treasurer while the city posts the now‑separated clerk and treasurer position.
The manager said the governor signed charter changes approved by voters last year that officially separated the clerk and treasurer roles. He asked the council “to appoint Cheryl Mativia as acting treasurer… in the interim,” while the city posts the new position.
The manager said the council will receive a ratification at a future meeting; no formal appointment vote was recorded at Tuesday’s session and the manager told the council the ratification would occur next week.
Former city clerk and treasurer Carol Dawes, speaking in the second hearing on charter amendments, urged voters to reject a separate ballot item that would make the clerk an appointed position. Dawes said she supports maintaining the clerk as an independent elected office and encouraged residents to vote in Tuesday’s election.
Separately, the clerk’s office reminded residents that the annual town meeting election is Tuesday, May 13, at the Barre Municipal Auditorium; polls open 7 a.m.–7 p.m., absentee ballots are being mailed through Friday and drop boxes are available at City Hall. Fourth‑quarter property taxes are due Thursday, May 15; the clerk noted the office is closed on election day.
