Perry approves solid-waste contract extension with Davis Sanitation, keeps 2% rate option

The Perry City Council on May 5 approved the municipal solid-waste collection and disposal contract with Davis Sanitation Inc. for fiscal year 2025–26, which includes an option for a 2% net rate increase over the prior contract rate. Council members recorded unanimous support in roll call votes during the business session.

During discussion, council members and staff described ongoing service issues, particularly limb and brush pickup, and said residents sometimes misunderstand the city’s pickup procedures. The council and staff discussed the transfer station’s value to the city and logistics of limb pickup, noting the contract contains separate provisions for biweekly and monthly collection and rules on sized material and tying. One speaker referenced the city’s annual payment to the contractor as “about $440,000 a month,” described as an approximation in the meeting.

Council members asked staff to remind Davis Sanitation of contractual pickup commitments and suggested scheduling a meeting with the company to clarify expectations. No change to the contract’s funding source was made; the staff recommended using reserves for any appropriation needed for the contract.
