The Perry City Council issued a proclamation on May 5 honoring Municipal Judge Sherry Wallace on her retirement after 15 years as municipal judge for the city of Perry. Mayor Lawrence Wortham presented the proclamation during the council’s regular meeting and members of the community and the judge’s family attended.
The proclamation, read by the mayor, said Wallace had practiced law for more than 38 years and noted her service as an associate municipal judge before becoming the city’s municipal judge. In remarks to the council, Municipal Judge Sherry Wallace said serving on the municipal bench had been “one of the highlights of my career as a lawyer.” She described efforts during her tenure to raise courtroom standards, adopt a dress code and create plea forms to make defendants’ constitutional rights and probation conditions clearer.
Wallace thanked the council and introduced family members in the audience, including her husband and daughters. The council presented gifts and said a copy of the proclamation would be published in the Perry Daily Journal.
No formal council action or vote was required beyond the presentation of the proclamation.
