Assessor seeks GIS and parcel-fabric upgrades, supports staff training for certified appraisers

The Santa Fe County assessor’s office presented a relatively flat FY26 budget focused on technology updates and staff professional development during the Oct. 11 budget hearing.
Operations Manager Jennifer Romero told commissioners that the assessor plans to expand use of aerial and oblique imagery to support appraisers, and to migrate the county’s parcel management to Esri’s parcel-fabric platform to better integrate parcel data with GIS. Romero said modernized imagery and parcel fabric will improve the office’s workflow and help appraisers review difficult-to-access areas.
Romero also said the office is exploring ways to expand incentive pay so more employees can pursue New Mexico certified-appraiser designations, and that overtime has been an important tool during statutory appraisal deadlines. Manager Schafer said the assessor’s full appraisal and reappraisal plan will be presented at the board’s regular meeting next week, per state law.
Why this matters: Accurate parcel information and current imagery support valuation, appeals and interdepartmental workflows such as permitting and planning. Commissioners did not vote on the assessor’s budget request during this session.
