Madison parks reopenings advance after river flood; cleanup continues at Crystal Beach and Hargett Matthews

Madison Park Board members heard an update on flood recovery work and reopening timelines on Wednesday as staff described five weeks of ongoing cleanup after a major river flood devastated parks along the riverfront.
Operations manager Miss Burnette said the parks department has been working five weeks on flood remediation, with Christian Hansen taking the lead on recovery at Crystal Beach, the city campground and Hargett Matthews. Burnette said regular seasonal work is also under way, including events and program launches in May and the new registration software rollout.
Christian Hansen and other staff gave details on site conditions and recovery steps. Hansen said the dog park “suffered probably the least damage,” is cleaned and open; campground pavement was scraped and will be hosed down, sod was being laid Monday and Tuesday and the department planned to reopen campsites for Memorial Day weekend reservations. He said crews expect to have reservations available for Memorial Day weekend and did not foresee problems with reopening the campground.
Hansen described the pool at Crystal Beach as a more complex recovery. He said crews removed motors and sensitive equipment from basements before the flood and that much of the remaining work is to remove heavy deposits of river mud from pumps, piping and equipment. The pool contractor Spears will perform filter and media work and conduct a final handover; Hansen estimated “roughly two weeks” after the contractor’s work before opening, and Burnette confirmed the pool is scheduled to open for Memorial Day weekend.
Hargett Matthews remains closed, Hansen said, and staff expect a turf specialist to inspect the field to determine whether repair or replacement is required. He described the turf damage as “significant” and said the field was not usable at the time of the report.
Staff emphasized the scale of the cleanup and noted the department pulled staff from regular duties to prioritize flood recovery. Several board members praised staff for the preparatory work that protected some building systems and for rapid cleanup, while also raising that some repairs — notably an elevator at Crystal Beach — remain dependent on vendors completing safety inspections and parts installation.
No formal board action was taken on the recovery items during the meeting; staff said they would continue work and return with further updates as needed.
The board scheduled a next meeting for June 4.
