Ocoee police: school-zone beacons set 20 mph; enforcement continues during school hours, not on weekends

At the May 6 Ocoee City Commission meeting, the police chief clarified how school-zone speed enforcement works after a commissioner asked whether cameras operate only during posted times.
The chief said the 20 mph school-zone speed limit applies when the beacon lights are flashing. “It's the 20 miles an hour when the beacon when they're flashing lights are flashing,” the chief said. He added that even when beacons are off, officers can still monitor the broader roadway and issue tickets during school hours: “After these beacons are off, we're still monitoring and we can issue tickets.”
Commissioner Wilson asked whether enforcement is limited to 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; staff answered that enforcement occurs “all day through while school's in session” and confirmed that weekends and holidays are not enforced and that there is no enforcement during summer break when school is not in session.
The chief and staff said they would clarify signage and enforcement hours to reduce public confusion.
