Mounds View and Irondale student representatives report spring awards, competitions and senior events

Student representatives from Mounds View and Irondale high schools updated the board on athletics, music, theater, academic competitions and senior-year events including awards, scholarship recognitions and upcoming activities.
Student representatives from Mounds View High School and Irondale High School reported a roster of spring activities, awards and upcoming senior events to the Mounds View Public School District board on May 6.
The Mounds View representative said Kate Reber, a senior, received an Athena Award after involvement in cross-country, track and basketball, and that the school will send 15 students to All-State Music camp July 29–Aug. 2 (eight orchestra, four band and three choir students). The representative also reported that a student startup, Eartha, won $6,000 as Junior Achievement J Company of the Year for upcycling glass beads into sustainable bracelets, and Girl Ease took third and $3,000 and will advance to nationals in Atlanta. The school’s DECA competitor Macy Adams placed on the podium at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando. The Mounds View representative noted signing day for 28 seniors, prom on May 10, senior awards night on May 14, and other senior events including a senior picnic, sunrise/sunset gatherings and a senior breakfast at Bethel.
Irondale’s representative reported that the school’s robotics team, Nightcrawler, placed first in the Archimedes division at the national competition in Houston and that junior Afomia Mespin was named a Dean’s List finalist. Irondale students earned numerous honors in speech and debate, including a state first-place finish for student Boyana — the school’s first state champion in speech since 2002 — and the coach was named coach of the year at sections. Irondale also reported a second-place finish in the ACE (Architecture, Construction and Engineering) competition at the University of Minnesota, scholarship awards to team members, art awards on display through May 16 at the Ford Family Gallery, a marching-band garage sale May 17 at Edgewood Middle School, and a mental-health walk held the same day as the board meeting.
Both student representatives thanked the board for the opportunity to report. The session consisted of informational updates; no action or votes were taken.
