The Board of Aldermen approved a parks task order with Quality Landscaping to plant native flowers and other habitat improvements in Snowden Grove Park to attract migrating hummingbirds, a project described by officials as both a beautification and tourism initiative.
City officials said the work will target wooded areas behind the baseball fields and near the detention area northwest of the amphitheater. The mayor estimated the project cost at about $150,000 and said staff believe surplus funds in the parks budget can cover the expense so the action is budget neutral.
Alderman Wheeler and other aldermen supported the item; the motion to approve the task order passed on roll call. At the meeting Wheeler noted the site would provide a setting for prom pictures and other photos, while the mayor emphasized tourism benefits and improved habitat.
City staff did not present a detailed planting list, contract scope, or a project schedule at the meeting; those details will be set out in the task order and project documents.
