Enid rolls out civics curriculum for middle and high school students to explain city government

Mayor David M. Mason and Commissioner Whitney Roberts outlined the program and credited Terry (library director) for preparing a ready-to-use curriculum, including a PowerPoint and ward maps. "I think we need to try to go out into the school systems and talk to as many kids as we can about our city government," Commissioner Whitney Roberts said, describing the rationale for the outreach.
Mayor Mason said staff and commissioners will deliver the sessions at schools at no cost to districts and that the city will provide handouts and materials. The first sessions were scheduled for the next morning at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at OBA (a local school), targeting ninth graders for an initial run-through. Terry said the library will host sessions after the school visits and that library staff are prepared to support schools with curriculum and follow-up activities.
Officials framed the effort as civic engagement and workforce development: teaching students where local decisions are made and encouraging future involvement in boards, commissions and elected office. The program will be staffed by commissioners and library personnel on a voluntary basis; no formal vote was required. City leaders encouraged any local school to request a visit and said the city will supply materials and presenters.
