The advisory group approved rewritten language clarifying how occupied‑standby controls are to work in systems where a dedicated outdoor‑air system (DOAS) operates in parallel with zonal heating and cooling.
Members said the model-code language had been written primarily with VAV systems in mind and did not fit Washington’s widespread practice of using DOAS (single multi‑zone ventilation) paired with separate heating/cooling devices. The rewritten text clarifies when a DOAS must zone or provide dampers, how occupancy sensors interact with supply and zone control, and how replacement air required by the mechanical code (e.g., for exhaust) is to be handled.
TAG approved the proposed rewrite; staff will make minor editorial fixes. The change is intended to remove ambiguity for designers and code officials about when ventilation can be reduced based on zone occupancy and when dampers or zone isolation are required.
