Committee OKs purchase of new fire pumper; delivery estimated 33–36 months

The Saint Charles City Government Operations Committee voted to approve the purchase of a Pierce Enforcer pumper fire engine, committee members heard at their May 5 meeting.
Chief Keith Mothy told the committee the purchase is a budgeted item funded through the Fire Apparatus Replacement Fund and that delivery of the vehicle is estimated at 33 to 36 months. “Approval of this purchase will ensure that the St. Charles Fire Department remains well equipped to be able to continue to provide high quality emergency services to the community,” Mothy said.
The apparatus is intended to replace a 2006 Seagrave pumper that the department expects to reach or exceed a typical 20-year service life; with the estimated delivery schedule the vehicle would be about 22 years old at replacement. Mothy said staff leveraged a cooperative purchasing agreement to reduce the final price by almost $71,000.
Committee members asked about pricing and financing. Mr. Ortle asked whether the price is locked for the 33-month delivery window and whether prepayment would secure a lower cost. Mothy said the department had the option to prepay, but that finance staff advised against prepayment because potential lost investment income would likely exceed any savings; the department therefore opted not to prepay.
A motion to approve the purchase was made by Vanguard and seconded by Worbald. Roll call recorded affirmative votes from Fultz, Vanguard, Munz, Kim, Spellman, Petrillo and Werbal; the motion carried.
The committee discussion and vote were procedural approval at the committee level; the item will move forward to the full city council as part of the council omnibus for formal consideration.
