City Council voted May 20 to send a letter to the Butler County Regional Transit Authority (BCRTA) requesting an expanded seasonal bus route to improve access to the Oxford community park and aquatic center, the Knowles of Oxford senior community, and the Locust Street business corridor.
Jessica (staff member) presented a Recreation Board recommendation, noting the board met in March 2025 and formally asked council to request expanded seasonal service. Jacob Young, chair of the Recreation Board, told council expanded routing would provide access for seniors and residents without a motor vehicle and would improve mobility to recreation and shopping destinations.
Staff clarified that a council vote to send the letter does not commit the city to funding the service. After discussing routes with BCRTA, staff told council any expanded route would carry fiscal costs to the city and estimated that the city’s share could be “upwards of $50,000” if the city agreed to implement a route.
Councilmembers welcomed the letter as a first step. Several members said they expect the letter could lead to further discussion about shared funding models, pilot service, or trial periods. One councilmember suggested exploring Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds as a potential funding source but staff said they would need to research that option.
The resolution to send the letter passed by voice vote. Council asked staff to move forward with the letter, await BCRTA’s response, and return with options for any required city funding if BCRTA requested local support.
