Northern Lebanon School District committee members agreed in principle May 6 to pursue a responsible‑use policy on generative artificial intelligence rather than a blanket ban, and asked administrators to draft training and approved‑tool guidance for staff and students.
Doctor Messinger told the committee that a strictly restrictive policy “is just not where we are in education.” He said the district should teach students and staff to use AI tools responsibly, with training and safeguards to prevent misuse such as copying AI output wholesale into assignments.
Board members supported an approach that requires training and approved tools and suggested the policy be revisited regularly. One staff member clarified the committee’s focus: “Everything we're discussing here is generative AI,” and recommended the policy address that category specifically. Administrators said professional development will be provided for staff and students and that the policy will define approved tools, training expectations and citation standards.
The committee also recommended establishing a review cadence for the policy — administrators noted the need to update language frequently as capabilities and guidance evolve — and tasked staff to prepare a more complete draft for the policy committee and a June vote.
