Racine Unified School District administrators asked the school board on Monday to pre-approve procurement of long‑lead construction items for the Goodland Montessori renovation and addition, citing the need to lock in equipment and materials ahead of a guaranteed maximum price.
"Administration is seeking approval in advance of the GMP so we may procure items such as major HVAC equipment, structural steel, precast, and electrical for the Goodland Montessori project," a staff member said, adding the district will ask the board at its business meeting to approve procurement in the amount of $6,601,305.
The work described for Goodland Montessori includes a new gymnasium addition, a new kitchen to support the K building and interior renovations to an existing 1960s building, officials said. One of the most substantial components is the installation of HVAC and air conditioning in a building that currently lacks full air conditioning; the presentation noted the existing combined gym/cafeteria ("gymateria") will be separated by the project.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the scope. "Remind us what's happening at Montessori because we have so many things going on," Board Member Barbian said. District staff reiterated the project elements and thanked the board for approving pre‑procurement steps to keep costs down.
No formal vote was taken at the work session; the administration said the request will be on the agenda for the next business meeting two weeks later for formal approval.
