Recreation department reports robust springs programs; summer camp at capacity

The Norristown Department of Recreation told borough council on May 6 that spring programming including an Iftar, MLK Day of Service, a spring egg hunt and basketball leagues drew strong participation and that its 2025 summer camp is full.
Recreation staff said the department launched an online registration system (RecDesk) accessible from norristown.org, which requires account creation for program registration. Staff reported summer camp capacity at 105 participants, with waiting lists in some age groups (15 on the waiting list for ages 7–8, five for ages 9–10); staff are using Hancock Elementary School and the Norristown Recreation Center to host the camp in two phases.
Officials also summarized spring basketball participation (largest age group was 8–10, which was increased three times to avoid turning kids away) and said the department runs volunteer-driven leagues and uses local referees. The department plans Memorial Day and summer concert series programming at Elmwood Park (subject to bandshell repairs timeline) and will run movie nights in partnership with Montgomery County library.
Council members praised the high turnout and asked staff to continue outreach. No new budget or staffing actions were proposed during the presentation.
