Jamerson noted that Northbrook’s program — stamping permit drawings and having inspectors confirm detector installation during permit inspections — saved lives. "Anytime anyone takes out a permit for anything inside the house…they inspect to make sure there are smoke detectors per state law," Jamerson said, and he urged Riverwoods to adopt a similar process. He emphasized the detectors need not be hardwired; 10‑year battery alarms meet the requirement.
Director Witt and staff reported that the village’s adopted residential building code already contains detector requirements and that BNF (building services) and Inspector Norberg have been conducting compliance inspections. Witt said a stamp for permit drawings is a practical step and that the village would order one immediately. Trustees agreed the stamp could be added quickly and directed staff and inspectors to enforce detector requirements when conducting permit inspections.
No formal ordinance change was adopted at the meeting; trustees instructed staff to proceed with implementation through inspection practice and administrative stamping of permit documents.
