Auditor Alice McCoy told the Tooele County Commission at the May 2025 meeting that the number of parcels slated for tax sale has been reduced to 16 parcels with about $100,000 in delinquent taxes remaining, down from an initial list of 57 parcels representing roughly $7.3 million in delinquencies.
McCoy outlined the county’s outreach and review process: assessor, treasurer, recorder and auditor offices collaborate to verify records; staff mails notices, publishes properties in the newspaper (six times for this cycle though four are required), sends certified letters, performs home visits and conducts phone outreach. The sale is conducted via publicsurplus.com and runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday; properties will be sold to the highest bidder and any excess proceeds above county obligations are disbursed to property owners or heirs (or to the state if unclaimed).
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the addresses listed in the notices (McCoy explained the mailed addresses are last known contact addresses, not necessarily the property address) and about unsold properties (unsold parcels return to county ownership and the commission decides subsequent disposition; historically they have been reoffered for sale later). The commission approved proceeding with the tax-sale notices and process.
McCoy said the county works to avoid selling properties where possible and will continue outreach to owners before the online auction.
