Saunders Road project moves forward; village completes land acquisition and buys $31,540 wetland credits

Director of Community Services Kevin Witt reported that “the land acquisition process is finally complete. Last week IDOT certified the project and they anticipate that it will be on their June 13 flooding. Construction would then likely start sometime in August.” Witt also told trustees the village has escalated efforts to locate a longstanding water main leak near Saunders Road and Braeburn, and that subsequent survey and topographic work will follow demolition and backfilling phases on related parcels.
At the meeting the board voted to approve a purchase agreement for wetland mitigation credits from V3 Wetland Restoration for $31,540. The agenda item was described as "Thorn Creek Headwaters Preserve Wetland And Stream Mitigation Bank purchase agreement with V3 Wetland Restoration and payment of $31,540 for the purchase of wetland mitigation credits for the Saunders Road Service Transportation Program." The motion passed on a roll call with trustees recorded as voting aye.
Witt also reported unrelated but concurrent work: demolition began at 3680 Deerfield to address an indicated eyesore; village staff temporarily halted work to require dust control but expect demolition and a full site cleanup within about two weeks. The village is continuing investigations into a water main leak that has caused driveway settlement at 1661 Saunders; county coordination is ongoing because the potential source may be in adjacent right‑of‑way.
Trustees did not alter the Saunders Road project schedule at the meeting. The approved purchase of mitigation credits is intended to satisfy regulatory obligations tied to the Saunders Road improvements and allow the project to advance into construction.
