Landmarks commission honors local restorations and caretakers during Historic Preservation Month

At the May 5 council meeting staff reported on Historic Preservation Month activities and the Landmarks and Design Commission’s awards for commercial and residential restorations, including recognition of property stewards and a community‑selected building.
City staff briefed the council on Historic Preservation Month activities and on awards presented by the Landmarks and Design Commission.
Staff said the commission and the local museum organized community activities and a history quest during May, and that educational displays were on view at the public library. The commission presented awards in four categories during a recent ceremony: commercial restoration, residential restoration, the commission award and the community‑selected award.
The commercial restoration award recognized the historic Fiddler Building (built circa 1908–1909) following an extensive rehabilitation by owners Kelly and Adam Wynn and Ponderosa Construction that included structural and mechanical work while preserving historic integrity. The residential award recognized the “Castle House” at 716 East Third Avenue, owned and stewarded by Kelly Garrett. The commission thanked longtime steward David Cross and preservationist Steven Wright with commission awards for their decades of restoration work in the city. The community‑selected award went to the “Rebuilding” (built 1910), which received about 73 votes from a nearly 300‑vote public ballot.
Staff encouraged the public to visit exhibits and noted the commission’s ongoing work to celebrate and preserve Ellensburg’s historic character.
