Policy subcommittee moves Title IX updates to full committee after first reading

The Braintree School Committee’s Policy and Education Subcommittee voted unanimously to forward updated Title IX procedures and related nondiscrimination policies to the full committee after a first reading, the subcommittee chair said May 5.
"Braintree's Title IX policies, which were adopted last fall, have been aligned with current federal policy on the advice of our attorney," Ms. Duffy, chair of the Policy and Education Subcommittee, told the full committee. She added that Massachusetts state law protecting students and staff from gender-based discrimination and harassment remains unchanged.
Duffy listed several recommended edits and technical corrections, including restoring prior Title IX procedures that align with federal guidance from January 2021 and removing redundant policies. She noted a number of minor typographical fixes will be submitted before the next meeting and requested updated cross-links to related nondiscrimination policy pages.
The committee treated the recommendation as a first reading; Duffy said the policies will return for a second reading in June. No final vote was taken this evening.
Members asked clarifying questions during the discussion. Mr. Fogarty asked whether the item was a first reading; Duffy confirmed that it was and that the committee would receive a second reading in June. Other items Duffy flagged for correction included an inserted comma and an extra space in specified policy subsections, and a request to update links to new policy documents once finalized.
The subcommittee did not propose any substantive changes to state protections; Duffy emphasized that Massachusetts law regarding gender-based discrimination and harassment remains in force regardless of federal procedural changes.
