Council Rock School District staff presented clarifying changes to health-related policies May 5 that tighten language on screenings, mandated reporting and accommodations for food-allergic students.
The draft for health examinations and screenings clarifies that families will be directed to have screenings conducted by the child’s private physician when appropriate “for purposes of continuity of care.” Staff also reiterated that any employee who reasonably suspects child abuse must report it, noting that staff are mandated reporters.
On food allergy management, the revised language aims to ensure accommodations for students whose dietary needs create medical concerns, including severe or potentially life‑threatening allergies and other adverse reactions that may not meet a strict legal definition of “disability.” District staff said accommodations will require a written medical statement signed by a physician, physician’s assistant or certified registered nurse practitioner that identifies the condition, foods to avoid and suggested substitutions. The policy also notes 504 eligibility and supports for students with qualifying conditions.
Staff said the changes are primarily clarifying language rather than substantive new requirements and that prior concerns raised at earlier meetings were addressed in the redraft. The committee did not indicate further delays; staff will proceed with the revised language for board consideration.
