East Islip sixth-graders perform at Regisbee Hall; district, parent group thanked

The East Islip Union Free School District staged a sixth-grade spring concert at Regisbee Hall on Cinco de Mayo, featuring orchestra, band and choral pieces and performances by student soloists. School leaders used the event to thank district officials and the parent organization that supports the music program.

The concert showcased the district’s elementary and middle school music programs and drew staff, families and student volunteers. Anthony Vazgrana, the middle school principal, opened remarks and thanked the district for arts support, saying the Board of Education and central administration had helped prepare the students for the program. "I do want to say thank you to the Board of Education for their support of the arts," Vazgrana said.

Dr. Waddell, identified in remarks as the venue director, reminded the audience that the district was observing Teacher Appreciation Week and asked attendees to acknowledge teachers in the room. Organizers noted that the program could not be live-streamed because a separate "Meet the Candidates" event was occurring; a staff member said the concert was being recorded and would be posted to YouTube after the event.

Pieces performed included an arrangement of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee," selections tied to spring dance traditions in Cornwall, England, an orchestral arrangement of music from the film Caddyshack, the band piece "March Militaire," and a closing band arrangement of "Defying Gravity" from the musical Wicked. Student musicians who received onstage recognition included percussionists Christian Dandona, Eleanor McRedmond, Salvatore Tringale and Abigail McMahon, and pianist Isabella Steed. The concert also featured an a cappella group and soloists from the choir.

The parent organization EIMAPS (East Islip Music Association of Parents and Supporters) staffed a 50-50 raffle and apparel table in the lobby and was recognized from the stage for its volunteer support. Vazgrana and other presenters asked the audience to remain present for all groups and to silence phones while performances were under way. "This is the only time you will see this concert. So turn off your phones and be present and don't miss the moment," Vazgrana said.

Near the program's end, choir director Bella Cara addressed the audience, thanked families for their support and announced that she is retiring; she said working with the students had been "an absolute pleasure." The evening closed with final performances and acknowledgement of the concert crew, composed of middle and high school students who handled staging duties.

Organizers asked attendees to check the district's online channels for the recorded video after the concert and to support parent volunteers in the lobby. No board actions, votes or formal district policy changes were discussed during the program.
