The Monongalia County Commission on May 7 approved a motion to match funds raised by students traveling to the Future Problem Solving international conference, dollar for dollar up to a $2,500 county contribution.
County officials said the total cost for the Mountaineer Middle School delegation is $6,375. The motion approves a county match equal to student-raised funds until the county's contribution reaches $2,500. The commission cited a similar action in May 2023 when it approved a $2,500 match for a prior Future Problem Solving delegation.
Commissioners also discussed a separate request from University High School's Technology Students Association, noting that the TSA's total cost was $17,000 and that the county previously approved a $3,500 match for that group. The commission said the matching approach is intended to ensure student fundraising participation and consistency with past practice.
The motion to approve the dollar-for-dollar match up to $2,500 passed by voice vote at the meeting; individual roll-call votes were not recorded in the transcript.
