The Columbus City Council on May 5 approved a committee recommendation to purchase a Nebraska Department of Transportation maintenance yard for $950,000 for multi‑department use.
Staff told the council the state built a new maintenance yard and offered the surplus property to political subdivisions before marketing it publicly. The city plans to relocate the wastewater maintenance division and the parks and recreation maintenance division to the acquired site, freeing existing space for police department expansion and eliminating the need for separate future impound or maintenance facilities. Staff estimated that avoiding those separate construction projects represents a savings "well over $4,500,000" in today's dollars.
Officials said the $950,000 cost would be split equally between the general fund (for parks purposes) and the wastewater division; both divisions have funds available for the acquisition. Staff acknowledged some future upgrades and maintenance will likely be required, describing the facility as ‘‘older but still in very good shape’’ and noting future budget items will address needed work.
Staff also noted the state first offered the property to other local governments—county and the school district did not respond—before the state would place the property on the open market. The council adopted the committee report and approved the acquisition by voice vote.
