During a courtroom recess, Judge Stephanie Boyd warned attendees that scammers are calling residents claiming bank or utility emergencies and trying to obtain personal data such as Social Security numbers and account details.
"They always seem like when they call you that it's an emergency," Judge Boyd said, describing a recent incident in which a caller claimed a bank compromise and requested identifying information. She advised people to decline and to ask callers to provide identifying information so the person could call back through official channels.
The judge told the courtroom she nearly shared information during a hurried moment but stopped and said she would call back instead. The court resumed the day's business at 12:30 for a scheduled jury trial.
