Glenda Dalton, director of the Powell Senior Center, described a recent $70,000 reduction in federal funding that has driven the organization to seek additional local support and new grants. “We have provided over 100,000 services to over 1,860 individual clients in the last 12 months,” Dalton told the county commission.
Dalton said the center expanded programming, including a fall‑prevention class and a 12‑week “embracing aging” series starting June 13. She said federal cuts have required the center to write multiple grants and that community donations have partially offset declines (she reported $13,000 in donations to date).
The Powell Senior Center requested special funding from Park County to help maintain transportation, meals and supportive services. Dalton confirmed the senior center’s fiscal year runs Oct. 1–Sept. 30 and said matching local funds are a necessary part of some federal programs.
Commissioners acknowledged statewide uncertainty over federal and state grant levels and said they will consider the center’s request as part of the county budget process in late June; no appropriation was made that day.
