City planning staff outlined an application to rezone 3113 Prairie Avenue from C-1 office to C-2 neighborhood commercial so the property owner can convert a former rental house into a boutique-style toy store.
Julie Christensen told the council Chad Kellick, representing the Prairie Corners 2021 Irrevocable Trust, plans to renovate the building to look more like a storefront, create a parking lot behind the building and relocate an existing toy business from Darien to Beloit. Planning staff said the property is at the corner of Prairie and Highway BT and that the city’s comprehensive plan recommends an Avenue mixed-use designation for the site.
Planning Commission reviewed the proposed ordinance on April 23 and recommended approval by a 6–0 vote. With no public speakers during the council’s hearing, the council voted to lay the ordinance over to a second reading for final action.
