Dolton mayor, trustees sworn in; mayor vows audits, debt elimination and streamlined business licensing

Mayor Jason House and a slate of village officials were sworn in at a special Village of Dolton Board of Trustees meeting May 5 at Royal Estates, and House used his inaugural remarks to lay out near-term priorities including completing audits, seeking funding to eliminate municipal debt within his four-year term and simplifying business licensing to spur local economic activity.

The swearing-in included Trustee Edward Steve, Trustee Brittany Norwood, Trustee Kiana Belcher, Clerk Allison Key and Mayor Jason House. Justice Cynthia Cobb administered oaths to several officials during the ceremony.

Why it matters: House identified fiscal stability, economic revitalization and public safety as immediate goals for the village. The village’s ability to complete audits and secure funding bears directly on service restoration, debt obligations and the capacity to support public works and emergency services.

House said the village already has begun administrative work, including bringing audits current and signing off on a recent flurry of licenses. "We have already made changes," Mayor Jason House said, noting that village staff approved more than 75 business licenses and 10 liquor licenses in the past three months. He added, "Dolton will be debt free by the end of this four-year term." House also said his administration will "seek the funding that we need" and make "tough decisions collectively as a board" to restore financial stability.

On public safety and operations, House said he had spoken with police command staff and firefighters and expects improved relations and service delivery. He described a plan to make Dalton's main thoroughfares cleaner through partnerships with businesses and to provide resources to public works.

Trustees and other officials who spoke emphasized unity and persistence. Trustee Kiana Belcher urged continued voter engagement and local participation, telling residents, "Stay the course." Trustee Brittany Norwood thanked supporters and said the experience of recent years strengthened her resolve; she repeated an adage she used during remarks: "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger."

The meeting closed with a unanimous roll-call vote to adjourn taken by the trustees present. Trustee Kiana Belcher moved to adjourn, Trustee Andrew Holmes seconded, and Trustees Tammy Brown, Brittany Norwood, Stanley Brown, Kiana Belcher and Andrew Holmes voted "aye." Mayor House's seat was recorded as vacant for that roll call because he had been sworn in as mayor.

The inauguration also included ceremonial acknowledgments of community partners and visiting regional officials. Organizers announced light refreshments and a community celebration scheduled for the coming Saturday.
