Yucaipa Valley Water District updates Calimesa council on ASR Phase 1 drilling near Roberts Road

The Yucaipa Valley Water District on May 5 briefed the City of Calimesa council on the status of Phase 1 of its aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) project near Roberts Road in Calimesa.
Joyce McIntyre, a board member of the Yucaipa Valley Water District, said the Phase 1 design uses three ASR injection wells to recharge the groundwater basin with recycled water. During summer months the wells can be operated in reverse to extract stored recycled water to meet peak demands, McIntyre said.
"The ASR project, Phase 1 located near Roberts Road in the City of Calimesa will allow the groundwater basin to be recharged with recycled water through the use of 3 ASR wells," McIntyre said. She told the council the project was awarded to Lane Christian Company on Dec. 17, 2024, and that Lane had acquired necessary permitting and began drilling three injection wells in March 2025.
McIntyre said Geoscience is providing daily updates to the district and that pilot borehole drilling reached a total depth of 1,000 feet on April 1, 2025. She described Phase 2 as a future step to develop production wells to recover recharged potable water after an appropriate subsurface residence time, in compliance with drinking-water regulations.
McIntyre said construction crews are working 24 hours at the site and that security measures are in place to discourage trespassing. The district has scheduled a site tour for council members and others; staff provided a picture and indicated soil-sample boxes are available for review on the tour.
No council action was taken; the presentation was informational. Staff said permitting, required testing and engineering review will continue as Lane completes each well.
