Beltrami County schedules public hearing May 20 for shoreland management ordinance

Beltrami County commissioners agreed by consensus to set a public hearing on a draft shoreland management ordinance for their next meeting on May 20.
The draft ordinance comes to the board after the county Planning Commission voted to recommend approval on April 28, and county planning staff said the next required step is a public hearing followed by conditional approval from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. "I'm suggesting setting a public hearing date for the next county board meeting on May 20," planning staff member Brent said.
Brent told the board the DNR review is "in the works" and that the DNR still had "a couple weeks left" to meet its timeline for providing conditional approval. He advised that after the public hearing the board could bring the ordinance back at a future meeting for potential action depending on what public input the hearing produced.
Board members asked whether the hearing could be held at the board's regular 5 p.m. meeting time; Brent said that would be acceptable provided the legal notice timing requirements are met. The board chair confirmed consensus and directed staff to get the notice advertised for the May 20 meeting.
No vote to adopt the ordinance was taken at the meeting; commissioners only set the public hearing and noted the DNR conditional review remains pending.
