At its May 6 meeting, the Harrison County Board of Education recognized outstanding school staff with two county-level awards: Ivy Alonzo was named Harrison County Schools’ Service Personnel of the Year and Renee Powell was named Harrison County Teacher of the Year.
Ivy Alonzo, a special education aide at Johnson Elementary School, was chosen by a panel after an application and review process that drew letters of support from families, coworkers and administrators. "Ivy Alonzo is a special education aide at Johnson Elementary School. Her daily work entire includes arm pads, white sleeves, a walkie talkie, a bright red backpack full of tricks, and 1 giant smile," said Heather Holbert, who prepared comments for the board and noted the personal connection between Alonzo and the students she supports. The board framed Alonzo’s work around her role supporting two students with complex needs and the extra care she provides outside regular hours; Holbert noted Alonzo often provides respite care and has developed relationships with families.
Renee Powell, a fourth-grade teacher at Big Elm Elementary School, was announced as the Harrison County Teacher of the Year. Board presenters described Powell as a National Board–certified teacher who builds strong relationships with students and families and promotes a love of learning.
The board paused its agenda to allow photo opportunities and brief remarks from the honorees’ schools. No formal board action beyond the recognition was recorded.
