Greece Teachers Association outlines community work, encourages support for budget and endorsed school-board candidates

The union speaker said GTA members interviewed candidates in collaboration with four other Greece unions, that recommendations were approved through a representative assembly and that those recommendations encourage community members to “vote yes on the district’s budget.” The speaker emphasized the union’s view that its endorsements are the product of member volunteers and not solely executive leadership.
The union representative outlined several ongoing GTA initiatives: collection efforts that yielded “over 134,000 pounds of food” and more than $10,000 donated to the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf; the Warren Crandall GTA scholarship program that has awarded roughly $250,000 to about 300 students over 43 years; the Coats for Kids work producing more than $56,000 in winter coats since 2016; a teacher-funded Greece Teachers Community Programs 501(c)(3) that has provided more than $23,000 in classroom grants since 2018; contributions to the Greece Education Foundation and United Way campaigns; instrument donation drives and school-supply assistance; and a matching $4,000 contribution to 529 college-savings accounts for families.
The representative said roughly 400 of the district’s estimated 1,150 GTA members live in Greece and framed the union’s outreach as supporting students, families and the district at large, not only bargaining interests. The speaker closed by reminding community members to vote on May 20 and to consider the union’s endorsements when assessing candidates.
