The Wareham School Committee voted May 1 to approve the district’s annual Washington, D.C., trip for 8th graders and other students. Administrators described a multi-day itinerary that includes Smithsonian museums, the Holocaust Museum, Arlington National Cemetery (with an opportunity to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier), the National Zoo and additional memorials and museums.
The district estimated the trip cost at about $900 per student, with early-signup incentives (about $50 off) and fundraising options to defray costs. Administrators said breakfasts are provided by hotels and many dinners are included in the package; students buy lunches depending on where the group is visiting.
Leaders noted that Tuesday–Sunday or Sunday–Wednesday itineraries are common and that weekend departures increase cost because hotels and transportation tend to charge more. The committee discussed timing so as not to interfere with spring sports; administrators said leaving on Sunday reduced costs and maximized museum access but acknowledged weekend departures could create scheduling conflicts for student-athletes.
Committee members approved the trip by voice vote. Administrators said registration and fundraising information will be shared with families; the district planned to offer payment schedules to reduce upfront costs.
