Alpharetta awards $748,221 contract to fix drainage at Mayfield–Bethany roundabout after discovery of clogged pipe

The Alpharetta City Council unanimously approved a $748,221.72 low-bid award to Summit Construction for drainage improvements at the Mayfield and Bethany roundabout.
Public works staff told the council crews tied into a catch basin and a 24-inch pipe during project work and discovered the pipe was completely clogged, causing runoff to be directed onto a private property rather than to the intended drainage route. “It showed the pipe, the 24 inch pipe, but, unfortunately, it was 100% clogged,” Director Sacevich said, adding that the condition was only revealed after cleaning and multiple rain events.
Staff said the fix will include underground detention within the roundabout and coordination with the City of Milton to close the road for about a week during summer months to complete construction. Multiple bids were received; Summit Construction was the low bidder. Councilman DeRidio moved to approve the contract and authorize the mayor to execute documents; the motion passed unanimously.
Staff characterized the pipe failure as an unintended condition rather than a contractual error by engineers, and said corrective work was necessary once the blockage and its effects became apparent.
