The change — previously reviewed by the city planning commission — would let a single monument sign serve businesses located on adjacent parcels, officials said. The notice was advertised in the local paper and the board voted to approve the hearing notice by voice vote.
“The planning commission approved it [in April],” the presiding official said. The same official also described an example driving the request: “we're doing this for the new development on Pennell Lane and Lake Road. The Zaxbys and Chipotle will be facing Lake Road, and they're offset from the parking lot. So there's a clear vision path to Aldi's, and they wanna set a monument sign.”
Alderman Dennis Moody moved to approve the notice of public hearing; Alderman Joy Harris seconded. Board members approved the notice by voice vote; the clerk recorded the motion as carried.
City staff included the planning commission agenda from April in the board packet. The presiding official told aldermen the specific Pennell Lane/Lake Road development is on the planning commission agenda and that the proposed monument sign would sit on the corner referenced in the packet. The planning commission’s prior review and the board’s vote to advertise set a public hearing where neighbors and other stakeholders can comment before any ordinance change is adopted.
If the board proceeds after the May 19 hearing, the amendment would change sign-review procedures to permit consideration of signs intended to serve multiple parcels; the board did not take any final action on the amendment itself at the May 5 meeting.
A public hearing on the amendment is scheduled for May 19, 2025; the board has advertised the hearing in the local newspaper as required.
