Story County Human Resources staff presented a revised county cell-phone policy to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday and the board voted to send the draft out for a seven-day public review.
County HR staff said the current policy dated to 2012 and separated a data allowance and device reimbursements. The proposed policy consolidates compensation into a single $40 monthly stipend, clarifies that the stipend covers base wireless plan charges and taxes but not device payments or insurance, and removes a previously available device-payment reimbursement. Staff described the change as an administrative cleanup reflecting current plan bundles used by wireless carriers.
The policy retains a limited incidental-use reimbursement option by claim for rare calls made on a personal phone for county business; supervisors discussed keeping a small reimbursement route for occasional use. Supervisor Heddens moved to send the revised policy for seven-day review; the motion carried with recorded ayes from Supervisors Heddens, Fazel and Merkin.
Staff said county-owned phones remain an option for some departments and monthly county-owned phone claims reviewed in the claims process ranged from about $27 to $52 per month.
