Tourism surge after rescue and recovery work boosts hotel demand; TDA reports strong revenues

TDA Director Ed Phillips said cash on hand for the TDA was $957,806.23 as of March 31 and that the authority had amended its budget to $1.4 million because projected revenue inflows to statutory distributions to Morganton and Valdese required an upward revision. Phillips attributed the surge to prolonged recovery activity and increased long‑stay needs for recovery workers and other workers in the region.
Phillips said MRI Hotel Group of Charlotte is closing on a site for a Home2 Suites near Exit 105 off Interstate 40 (behind the Longhorn) and expects construction to start later this year on a 91‑room property with kitchenettes designed for long stays. He also reported demand from destination events (a ukulele festival and weddings) and that many workers staying in Burke overnight were conducting recovery work in surrounding counties.
Phillips updated commissioners on park and trail status: many national forest trails and state parks are reopening, but large sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway remain closed and road repairs will take years; the region is awaiting federal procurement of repair contracts.
