Committee approves vape-shop licensing fees; ordinance to take effect Aug. 1

The Norwalk City Public Safety and Governance Committee voted unanimously on April 24 to approve recommended fees tied to a new vape-shop ordinance.
Under the fees presented by Chief of Staff Tom Lemelson, the application fee and renewal fee will each be $250 and a duplicate license fee will be $30. Lemelson said the license will be administered by the city clerk—s office and that the ordinance is set to take effect Aug. 1; staff—s goal is to have the licensing process operational by mid-May.
Lemelson told the committee staff benchmarked neighboring communities, noting Bridgeport has a tobacco license fee of $150 while Stamford, Danbury and New Haven do not have comparable vape licensing. Committee members said they support the ordinance as a public-safety measure; one member said police are repeatedly taking enforcement actions against vape shops that sell dangerous products.
The committee recorded unanimous approval for the fee schedule and the ordinance referral to the full council for final action.
