Walton County commissioners adopted the second and final reading of a planned unit development (PUD) amendment for Commerce Park that will allow a 60‑unit independent living facility intended to serve people with autism in place of a previously proposed townhome development.
Kelly Schultz, planning staff, explained the ordinance is the final reading of PUD Amendment No. 3 and follows prior approval of the associated major development (24‑000027). The PUD overlay amendment modifies the site entitlements and allows the mix of uses needed to permit the proposed independent living facility on the development site.
A commissioner asked a clarifying question about the facility’s purpose; staff confirmed the proposal is for an assisted or independent living facility for autism. Staff entered the report into the record, the commission moved and seconded the final reading, and commissioners voted in favor; no public comment was recorded.
The ordinance enables the developer to change the approved building program at Commerce Park to provide the specialized independent living units described in the application. Staff and the applicant will follow standard permitting and inspection processes as the project proceeds under the amended PUD.
