The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) reported that it hosted a principal-focused professional development event called "Principal Luzah," attended by about 300 principals and roughly 70 staff, board members said during a chair's report.
Board members said the gathering brought district, charter and at least one private-school principal together for sessions, poster presentations and lunch. The event included poster sessions showing USBE services and informational sessions on career and technical education (CTE) and child nutrition.
Sid, a USBE staff member, said, "There were about 300 principals first time, and we had a number of staff there who were not only responsible for putting it together, but everyone showed up to support their peers." He added that attendees responded positively when board leadership opened the event: "You just saw their affect change. You know, their eyes lit up, and they were open."
Board members also noted that the superintendent served as the keynote speaker and that Rich Nye from the governor's office spoke after lunch. Members of the board, including Molly, presented during the event, and staff who led the program included Quinn Kellis (MC), Julie Lundell, Katie Hill and a team led by Megan, according to remarks during the meeting.
The board described the event as a first-year effort that organizers expect to improve next year. No formal policy decisions or motions were reported in connection with the event during the meeting.
The chair framed the event as an opportunity to connect principals directly with USBE services and presenters; staff described the day as allowing principals to "hear from each other" and learn about programs and resources offered by USBE.
