Board members discussed the High School Activities Association(UHSAA) regioning and scheduling and urged that travel distance be given greater priority when assigning regions for competitions.
Member Carol said she meets regularly with UHSAA leadership and offered to bring board feedback to that body: "If there is anything that you think would be helpful for UHSAA," she said, "they're very receptive." Member Randy Booth argued that transportation should not "be the tail that wags the dog on scheduling and competitions," adding that "distance needs to have a higher consider priority than size."
Booth also reported on a recent two-day workshop he attended "with USDA down in Saint George" and described an upcoming leadership conference scheduled "September 25 through the '20 seventh, at Bryce Canyon at Ruby's Inn." He said organizers discussed funding options "to pay for your transport you know, to get down there, the hotel, the meals" and that space is limited. He outlined eligibility rules mentioned at the workshop: the leadership body is comprised of 19 board members representing either individual districts (if a district has 20,000 students or more) or grouped multi-districts for smaller populations, and priority for some openings may be given to newly elected local board members.
Members were invited to provide issues or complaints for UHSAA to address at the director-level; Rob Cuff, the UHSAA director, was named as the organization's director in the discussion. No formal motion to change UHSAA policies or to allocate funds for travel was recorded during the meeting; the remarks were presented as requests for staff to relay feedback and as an informational invitation to the conference.
