Beaufort County Schools presents three updated administrative regulations on instruction, curriculum and testing

Karen McKenzie, Teaching and Learning for Beaufort County Schools, presented proposed updates to three administrative regulations for committee review at the April 22 Academic Committee meeting: IS 2 (teacher expectations and accountability), IS 7 (curriculum development, adoption and review) and IS 44 (tests and examinations). McKenzie said the materials were presented for board knowledge; no formal action was required.

McKenzie said the updates include a new prefatory statement in each regulation that "the administrative regulation sets forth the superintendent's expectations." She said the nondiscrimination clause language was revised to align with current state directives and that IS 2 now explicitly references South Carolina standards and adds language requiring collaborative professional learning communities at each school.

On IS 7, McKenzie said the district removed a standalone implementation statement and added curriculum maps to clarify pacing and scope: "we don't just provide a curriculum to our teachers, but we provide a curriculum map," she said. She also said the district replaced wording about "differentiation" with "personalized instruction" to align with state guidance.

On IS 44, the tests-and-examinations regulation, McKenzie said the district updated language to reflect a statewide change in which English end-of-course testing responsibility has moved from English I to English II. She told the committee the regulations have been double-vetted with legal and cross-checked for citations.

Committee members responded with positive remarks about the clarity of the redlines and the effort required to prepare the changes. McKenzie offered to take questions; none were raised that required changes during the meeting. The committee did not take formal votes on the regulations at this session.
